looks like bob Casteel asked you a question on March 12th 2013. (wich key if you could only have one flute would you want most) i would really like your opinion on that one too. (i have just purchased a joena thompson flute in ebay) but really do not know much about flutes. was not sure wich one to get so i went with wich one i liked the sound of. wich key would you want most in a flute. wich one do you find yourself picking up most? also...wich flute maker....(yes yes, i know, way to many questions...lol) ps, wanted to buy the "set" of all your cd's how do i go about that? thanks, craig

Hi Bruce,

A big fan of your music. Have your CDs playing in my car all the time. Thanks for all of your tube videos. You inspired me - a music novice - to get a flute. I do have a request. I would love to see you play one of my favorite songs, "Oh Shenandoah", on the native american flute. I would be interested to know what you think about that song on NAF. Thanks again.

Well, after 3 months of playing by myself I finally went to my first Flute Circle at a Gathering they had at an Indian Cultural center in Lancaster SC. First time I've EVER met anyone else who even had an NAF, much less played one. Went around the circle completely before I played. I stood up, introduced myself, closed my eyes and played for in front of others for the first time. It was totally out of this world AWESOME! You were the first NAF player I ever heard and tried to learn from. You were never intimidating or show-offy. Your replies to my comments were motivational and I reallyREALLY thank you. You always made it feel possible to do something other than just toot around. Oh...by the way. I my first song was a totally way out blues ditty that had everyone tapping along, grinning and folks even got up to go get drums and rattles to join in. For just a tiny moment in time I felt like something I made was worth sharing. Thanks for what you do for us Newbies!

Enjoyed reading your personal and very frank bio. I was given a handmade native american flute by my Washoe Indian 'brother' a couple years ago. I've picked it up occasionally but not seriously. Your enthusiasm is infectious and selfless desire to share what you've learned is so cool. A humble, and honorable thing you're doing. You've inspired me to play...

I saw your rendition of Amazing Grace on YouTube and have been looking for a higher quality recording to play for my wedding march. I didn't see the song included on either CD... Do you have a quality recording you can direct me to?

Could be a long time.. Am also a Kent State grad..and a NE Ohio native.."home" was nearby. Also military...but am not Chinese.

Thanks for your helpful info..

Hi Allen,

Many years ago I had an album by Paul Horn. He was playing a flute in the Taj Mahal. You probably know of it. It was the most incredible sound that I had ever heard. Note upon note overlaying one another for up to 20 seconds or so...and he was able to actually create harmonies with the different notes because they lasted that long. Utterly otherworldly and heart renching music.

Just last week, I received a David Nighteagle Low Bass D NAF that I had ordered from him. It is Eastern aromatic cedar and just really so beautiful.

I have never played one before but I have a good ear. I am finding that your tips and the beautiful songs that your flutes sing are wonderful inspiration for me to learn. I was not aware of mode 2, for example...and was already beginning to wonder if I would be able to stay with it as it seemed that I only had 5 notes to play. HA! My flute is a 6 hole flute, btw.

I love the tunnel videos as they remind me of the Paul Horn lp from way back when.

There is something about you that touches my heart and I honor that. Thank you for sharing your love of the NAF with everyone and being such an inspiration.

Now, I am off to find myself an enclosed stairwell. It works! :)

Peace,
Terry

For the past few weeks I've been watching your youtube videos which have inspired me to learn how to play this wonderful instrument. I was really excited to see you have 2 albums on iTunes which are downloading as I type this. I live in Seongnam (stationed at K-16) and will hopefully be in this beautiful country for 2 more years. Perhaps if I walk past a tunnel in Chuncheon I will keep my ear out for you :)

That's kind of a sad bio. But life is certainly an evolving adventure, plenty of lonely times and spaces. And then there is joy, wind rain, creatures big and small. Watched your tube on the laughing crow gm and immediately bought one. Haven't ever played an instrument but am looking forward to learning. Want to play a drone badly. Should I learn circle breathing? Have been practicing it anyway. Take care, more videos. When you can and best regards. Smokey the blacksmith.

I came across your YouTube series while doing a search for the Native American pocket flutes, and was instantly mesmerized! I came across these little gems just a short drive away here in Colorado and was instantly drawn to them, trying them right in the small shop and trying not to purchase the lot there on the spot. I haven't picked one up yet but it's a matter of time--I like to do some "homework" before commiting to anything, and needless to say I'm enthralled at how musically flexible such a simple instrument is. Your personal story is an inspiration...to be within the world but not of it, and to follow one's passion and see where it takes you. Thanks for what you're doing--you're a blessing to more people than you know!

Allen,
I've been watching your videos for the three years I've been playing the NAF. There is not enough space on this site for me to tell you how much you have helped me on my journey!
I recently had Richard build me a Eastern aromatic flute in the key of F#m. After watching your rendition of Amazing Grace on You tube with a Laughing Crow Dm (over and over again,)I felt the need to own and play one of his flutes.
Needless to say it plays as sweet as it looks!
I am looking forward to your Drone video's as I have the curly birds eye Maple drone in the key of Em in Richards shopping cart as I write this.
Oh,and the getting unstuck tips you mention,I could use them NOW! :) I reach a level..get stuck..break through to the next level..get stuck..and so on.
I'm rambling...
Keep up the great work!
Paul

So impressed by your story and your flute playing. I have always been enamored with the Native American flute and while recently at the Clearwater festival - I ordered one -being made by Werner John. Have yet to get it but, in anticipation I ordered another in D# and after seeing your videos using the Laughing Crow flutes in Tiger Wood, I am most likely going to get one of those as well.

Keep up the great and inspirational music you are doing. If you offer any workshops - please post it on your site.

Allen, What a great talent you have! I enjoy hearing talented musicians on alternative instruments. I am a big fan of Jonah Thompson flutes. I had the opportunity of sitting down and chatting with him several times. He is an awesome story teller of all things Navajo. You Play very well and do great justice to his flutes.

I really like your song "I remember" tunnel version. When I heard the CD version it was great. The flute wasn't overpowered by the other additions and it was all blended together just perfectly.

Of course I bought the CD and a digital copy of it. One for the car and one for other devices.

Any one who likes your tunnel music won't be disappointed in the album. Thank you so much for the music.

January 9, 2011

Hi Bruce, thanks for the videos you put on 'you tube'. Due to these I have been inspired to take my own flutes to play in a disused tunnel. You've really got to try it to experience the echo you talk about. Have you ever thought about writing a 'finger chart' to allow others to play your music? Keep up the good work, all the best, Andy.

October 14, 2010

Bruce, thanks for all of the videos on Youtube. I bought a flute on the Blue Ridge Pkwy while on a M/C trip a few years back. It played fine or so I thought. After a year or so I stumbled across your Youtube videos which inspired me to start playing almost every night. I inquired about one of the flutes that you played and you said it was a Laughing Crow. A quick Google search unveiled his website then I called him. It seemed everything on his site was already sold. As you know Richard is an easy guy to talk to and he recommended a beautiful piece in F#. I bought it sight unseen based on his description and recommendation. When it arrived it was unbelievable and it played even better than it looked. Talk about exceeding all expectations. It hit me immediately that you get what you pay for, even though I paid $175 for my 1st flute what I paid for Richard's was worth every penny and then some. Lately I've been playing on my sailboat in light wind days on the Chesapeake and I sometimes sit on the deck of my marina and play out over the water. Many folks have stopped by and commented on the unique sound. I'm now ready to look for another flute. I'm considering a Contra Bass but as of now nothing is carved in stone. Keep up the good work, you were a great inspiration and I'm sure you've touched many more lives than you know. Peace and much love to all.

Oh, what a beautiful web site as well as your first cd! I'm so glad that your long effort for the music have finally seen the light. Your music is very soothing, beautiful, calm and tranquil with a magic touch of American Native Flute and some feelings of Celtic. Without much augmentation of back up sounds, your talent stands alone in transmitting genuine organic sounds. I believe that your music should give a lot of listeners catharsis and time for introspection. Great job!
